My new mint condition Contax Tvs with Carl Zeiss T* 28-56mm f/3.5-6.5 lens. This is beautifully made camera with mechanical zoom. Its accepts filters , have some useful futures like no noise when auto-focusing and its allows You use external flash with this camera :). I already load fp4 plus and waiting for developing.

Today I want to Corn Exchange in Edinburgh for Car Boot Sale. Honestly not much going on over there. I was looking for old old cameras and have good luck buying this Polaroid camera with last film frame inside.

Camera cost me 50 pence :).

Checking one of my favourite blogs www.barteess.blogspot.com I found post about worlds smallest large format camera K.W. Patent Etui 9x12cm - here.

I really like this camera especially for small size and beautiful made so I decide make some research about camera and camera maker.

Every Camera Has a Story: KW, the Patent Etui, and John H. Noble - this is what I found . It is great article about Patent Etui and history K.W factory.

After searching ebay I found one for sale in not bed condition but working shutter and big benefit original sale book. On sellers pictures camera looked totally bad because they were taken with flash and i think its the reason why not much people bid.

The most amazing in this all story is that I paid exactly the some price as camera was sold new 18 pounds. ( prices are shown on book ). So KW Negopock with dallmeyer serrac f:4.5 lens cost 18 pounds.

Camera is really light and small as You may see on pictures bellow it have rise and tilt possibility. Compur shutter works good on I all speeds looks to work fine but its sticky an B and T .

Camera comes without film holder so right know I need hunt for them.

Finally I receive my first big large format camera. Its 10x12 inch camera made by Marion company about 100 years ago. Camera is in fair condition and required a lot of cleaning.
Wood and bellows were very dirty , especially bellows inside contain very old and smelly dust :(. I took me 2 hours to clean this properly. While cleaning bellows I discover some light leaks but I think that some hockey cloth tape should help :). After cleaning I apply sesame oil on wood parts which give wood very nice shine!!!
Camera still need some work brass parts but this for right now it may wait.

Camera comes with 3 film holders 10x12 inch , one holder have insert for 8x10 inch film. Holders are also in fair condition and need some work. All of them are made by Graflex Corporation.

I really cannot wait for first pictures come out from this baby :).

35mm: Lucky 100 pushed to 800 in hc-110

This is my second roll with Ricoh R1 this time I decided push lucky 100 to 800 which required hacking dx code. Film was pushed in hc-100 1 hour stand development 20 C.
Thanks to my friend Pho-Tongrafica for developing and scan this roll for me.

I don't know how it possible but i got light leaks :( .

On 12 December I am moving to Edinburgh and it will be big change compare to living in China. I sold my bellowed Graflex my first large format camera. I wish I may take Graflex with me but its to heavy and I also had very good price. Here in China cameras are totally overpriced.

Selling Graflex allow me to buy new toy something which I always would like to have.
I bought Marion & Co Perfection 10x12 inch camera with 3 film holders. Camera will be ship to me when I arrive Scotland. Camera need some work but it shouldn't be problem to refurbish this one.

I try to find more information about this camera and bellow is what I found on camera-wiki.org.

Marion & Co. Ltd was only the last name of the company, which was founded as Augustin Marion, and changed its name several times^[2]. Finally we find time to shoot Danni portraits. It was also my last photoshoot in Beijing, next plates in Edinburgh. For close up picture I used my beloved unbranded petzval for half body shoots old PZO 110mm f:4,5 polish enlargement lens. I was surprise that its cover 4x5 inch plate.

Two weeks ago I bought Ricoh R1 as faulty. It didn't work i went to Wokesong camera market here in Beijing and they repair for me.Summary I paid 15 pounds. Lcd and viewfinder not working properly , I cannot see frame numbers and focus in viewfinder.

First thing which I done was modify panorama mode, all picture taken with 24mm f8 lens.
I use lucky 100 film ( which terrible ) in hc-110. 13 min 1:63 20 C

Yesterday I shoot my friend Vojtech and collodion teach me lesson , deffinitly it wasn't my day.I had huge problem to get acceptable results i shoot about 8 plates this one is the best. Unfortunately after washing I scratch :( this one.

After long time my Friend visit me and we decided to make his collodion picture. He want to be anonymous its the reason why he is wearing mask. I have last black glass plate so the first plate is on black glass , second one is on acrylic sheet.

I was curios how acrylic will work but i like results. Its not that good like on glass but still better than clear glass ( i don't like clear ). On acrylic surface collodion is more fragile but is also have one advantage. Varnish looks much better in my opinion.

We just come back from our trip to sea side . I was very excited because I may new toy Holga 120 GN. As always i used shanghai gp3 film . It was my first try shoot with holga so i decided push film to 400 . I am also exited because first time i used PMK pyro developer.

developer: PMK pyro 1a+2b+100 / 10ml +20ml + 1 litre water 23C
pre wash: 3min
time: 15 min, 1 agitation every 15 sec
rinse: 2 minutes
fixer:10 minutes
staining bath in used developer: 3 min constant agitation
wash: 20 minutes

After shooting Kalvin my new friend Agata arrived. She is very talented architect and beautiful woman. I want to try my new Poe Boy collodion mix. This is John Coffer mix without ether.I was nervous because its my first mix and the result is bellow.

Image is brighter and colours are more yellowish not grey. I need to say I am successful with my first mix.

Ilford fp4 + coffenol c-l + me = disaster

Today i scanned by my camera ilford fp4 negative developed in coffenol c-l. Results are bellow :( . Thin negative, very bad quality of pictures , pictures are not sharp at all.

After some experiments with coffenol I decide to try coffenol c-l with potassium bromide. I have 0,5 kg potassium bromide for collodion mixes so why not use it for coffe based developer.

film:
4x5 shanghai iso 100 , exposure time 1/2 sec ( lens cap shutter ) f:5,6 green filter.

developer ingredients :
40g instant coffe / 1l
10g vitamin c /1l
16g washing soda /1l
1g potassium bromide /1l

mixing :

coffee in 0,5 liter water
washing soda , vitamin C and potassium bromide in 0,5 liter water
later mix both to 1 liter of developer

development:

20 C 70 minutes semi stand. Agitation first 30 sec and later 3 times in 2,4,8,15,30 minute.

results:
It looks something went wrong. Negatives come out very thin and somehow they are like ambrotype images.When seeing to light they are negative images but when put on black they are positives.

I need definitely play more with this mix maybe i will discover how to make first films ambrotypes !!!

Long time ago I started collecting small mini cooper models, right now I have about 40 of them. When I started falling in love with photography, I then started collecting cameras. after a while, I had a lot in my collection, but later I figured out that I would only keep those which I use; so in the end I sold mostly all of them.

Two weeks ago I received packages from USA with nice tiny types and one small cased ambrotype.

I am totally impressed with the quality of these pictures , each of them is a small masterpiece. I especially like the ones of people in cars and of small children.

I wonder how they were staying still during the exposure.

I am very happy with my purchases and looking forward to grow my vintage pictures collection.

Currently after more than one year of waiting i start making images with collodion :) and its becomes my favourite photography technique. What i really love about it ,is this magical moment when after putting plate to fixer image appear.This is portrait of my chinese friend owner of frame store. Quality of this picture isn't good ( fog ,etc.)and the reason of that is dirty silver bath Bellow some backstage pictures.

While i left my home made 4x5 red wood camera in factory as prototype i made this picture with Graflex Crown and my as always unbranded magic lantern petzval lens.

As plate holder i used my home made wooden plate holder which is copy of 4x5 holders.I will write post about this holder.

I used 2 fluorescent lights octaboxes each about 2000 watt ( 7x85 watt light bulbs ) camera left and camera right. 9 seconds exposure time.

scanner photography

Some time ago i find some information about scanner photography and decide to try.It was very interesting and exciting to connect scanner to camera and turn into huge digital back.I didn't have that huge camera so i decided to make one.
First i made foam board prototype which was working great. Scanner camera is working almost like old viewing cameras. First stop is focusing with ground glass ,second instead of glass plate or film put scanner on camera back. Bellow pictures from this set up.

Each exposure is about 8 second and subject needs to stay still until scanner sensor stop reading view from lens.

Pictures are scanned in 600 dpi to tiff files ( about 70 mg each ). Later they are process in photoshop.

Medicated scanners on Windows system may only working with VueScan software. More about scanner photography in next posts
